Greystar Breaksground on Courier Square Phase II

Charleston, S.C. – November 8, 2024 – Greystar, a global leader in the investment, development and management of real estate, including rental housing, logistics, and life sciences, is pleased to announce the groundbreaking of Courier Square Phase II, the next chapter in the transformation of Charleston's Upper King Street corridor.

The first step in Phase II involves the careful relocation of a 37-inch live oak tree from within the development zone to a new home along St. Phillips Street. The tree will serve as the centerpiece of a lush oak park, creating a welcoming green space that enhances the Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighborhood.

"We are thrilled to further our presence in Downtown Charleston," said DJ Van Slambrook, Senior Director for Greystar Development. "Greystar remains committed to creating thoughtfully designed spaces that honor local culture, setting the stage for Charleston’s next era of growth."

Boasting 400 linear feet along the iconic King Street, Courier Square Phase II will feature 300 exclusive residences and over 13,000 square feet of premium retail space that will offer convenient access to vibrant shopping, dining, and cultural destinations.

In partnership with renowned architectural firms Sottile & Sottile and LS3P, Greystar secured unanimous approval from Charleston’s Board of Architectural Review (BAR), along with enthusiastic endorsements from historic preservation groups, including the Historic Charleston Foundation.

Greystar is collaborating with Charleston's American College of the Building Arts (ACBA) to incorporate handcrafted architectural elements, including hand-carved keystones, intricate ironwork, and ornamental cast details, adding a unique local touch that celebrates Charleston’s legacy of craftsmanship.

“Courier Square Phase II is thoughtfully designed to integrate seamlessly with the dynamic energy and historical character of Charleston’s Upper King Street. We are grateful for the support from the BAR and the Historic Charleston Foundation, which reinforces our dedication to preserving Charleston’s architectural heritage,” said Van Slambrook.
